Health Insurance - F.A.Q.

Medical Insurance

All non-immigrant international students enrolled at the university are required to be insured. The insurance premium is included in the tuition fees. Insurance is covered quarter by quarter. Students not enrolled for a quarter are not covered in any insurance plan. Should a student decide to buy just the insurance for the quarter he or she is not enrolled in, he/she can purchase the accident and sickness insurance by contacting the Office of International Affairs.

Louisiana Tech University offers a new insurance plan for all international students and scholars starting the Fall 2023 quarter. You may pick up a how-to guide and snapshot of our new insurance from the OIA or by emailing bolivier@latech.edu. All F-1 students and J-1 scholars are required to buy insurance from Wellfleet Student through Louisiana Tech University. The insurance cost of $304.55 will be included in your tuition and fees each quarter. You can find the coverage plan materials here.

We are working hard to ensure that all enrolled international students receive health insurance coverage. Below are some highlights that you should know:

  1. The Winter 2024 quarter's insurance term date begins on November 28, 2023 and ends on March 11, 2024.
  2. The Spring 2024 quarter's insurance term date will begin on March 12, 2024 and end on June 2, 2024.
  3. If you register for courses, you will receive an email from Compass Student Insurance with instructions on how to create your account online. The email is sent to your Tech student email address; please check your junk or spam folders.
  4. If you are not enrolling for courses, you do not have insurance coverage for the quarter.
  5. If you would like to purchase insurance for your dependents (F-2/J-2), you can do so through your MyInsurance account. Please remember that you must register your dependents each quarter. You can contact Jay Ligon at the OIA for more information regarding affordable plans for F-2/J-2 dependents.
  6. If you are on OPT, STEM OPT, or a J-1 scholar, you can purchase insurance coverage online here. You will need to upload your OPT I-20 and OPT Card (DS-2019 for J-1 scholars) in order to enroll. You will have the option to pay quarterly or yearly.
  7. Unless it is an emergency, you should always try to visit the Student Health Center on campus first before seeing another doctor. There will be no co-pay or expenses towards your deductible at the Student Health Center.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding health insurance, please contact Jay Ligon at ligon@latech.edu or (318) 257-4321.
